The Art Hotel Fuchspalast was designed by Austrian painter, sculptor, philosopher and visionary Professor Ernst Fuchs. He is considered a co-founder of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, a term coined in the 1950s for a current in Austrian art that is close to Surrealism. The painting style is based on the technical perfection of the Old Masters, the motifs are fantastic-unreal creations, sometimes with shocking, apocalyptic content.
Gorgeous colors, fancy shapes, Tiffany glass on the outer facade – The Art Hotel Fuchspalast is a prime example of fantastic architecture. Today’s hotel, which was ceremonially opened in 1998, used to be the old building of the Chamber of Labor with the former hotel “Der Stern”. On the south side exterior facade you can still see 6 parts of the former frescoes.
About 200 years ago, there was a city gate opposite the present hotel to enter the city center. In addition, a moat enclosed the city, where the present gardens are located. The architecture of the Fox Palace is supposed to reflect this original situation; the hotel is surrounded by a small moat, the entrance to the Fuchspalast represents the former city gate.
